Facebook Friend Limit of 5000 Should Be Removed

A fellow affiliate marketer, Tim Jones, has just tweeted:

Yes, earlier today Mark Zuckerberg has been named the TIME‘s 2010 Person of the Year. The wording goes as follows:

For connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them; for creating a new system of exchanging information; and for changing how we all live our lives. [source]

I think Tim Jones’ proposal is well in place now.

Just a couple of days ago I was discussing the problem of Facebook friend limit with Mitch Joel who is obviously not happy about the situation either:

Twitter chat between Geno Prussakov and Mitch Joel

Dear Facebook, any chance the friend limit can be removed, or at least increased, for those who really need it? Even if it entails a process similar to Twitter’s “verified accounts” (to prevent abuse of the system), I am sure people will be fine with this too. It’s just not convenient for people.

  1. That limit has been in place far too long. While Facebook has probably tripled in size (or more) we still have to deal with some arbitrary friend limit from eons ago (in internet time). Lame.

  2. I’m unsure about that, after all, the limit forces people to create addition profiles to friend further, so it inflates the amount of people who seem to be using it by creating multiple accounts.

    1. That is definitely an interesting train of thought, Tyciol, but as in the above-quoted example with Mitch Joel, the second “account” people normally create is a fan page (not another personal account).

  3. They must remove the 5,000 friend limit but nobody seems to know who to write to at Facebook to complain… They are cutting their own throats and it makes no sense to have the limit… It should be up to the individual
