3 Things I Learned While Vacationing

As my blog’s readers know, I have just returned from my annual vacation. Traditionally (i.e. for the third time in a row) we chose a Caribbean destination, and this time for the first time for us it was Riviera Maya, Mexico.

We loved it [and yes, the picture that you see on the right was taken there]. I find the waters and the mild climate of the Carribbean islands to be extremely rejuvenating… And today I’d like to share with you the three things I’ve learned while recharging my batteries on the beach (yes, a personal post, at last):

1) Watch where you step! On the last day of my vacation, while strolling along the beautiful white sand beach, I stepped on….. a wasp! Who knew that there could be wasps right on the sand?! My foot is still swollen, and I’ve certainly learned the lesson.

2) Disciplined reading can help you grow in knowledge, while resting at the same time. If you commit 2-3 hours a day to reading (while enjoying the beach, for example), you can complete a few great books (which I did in the course of the past 10 days) while having your rest.

3) Before this trip I thought of a full body massage as hmm… not a very manly thing to do… After having one on the last day of my vacation, I converted. I now believe that good massages — both full-body, and especially neck/shoulder ones — are an absolute must for everyone — especially if you’re spending as much time in static positions (like in front of your computer) as I do. I regret that I haven’t learned this until the very last day of my trip. From now on, massages will be a part of every vacation for me.

It’s good to be back to work. I’ve missed my desk, my computer, and the world I’m connected with through these two… Here’s to another amazing year (wait! haven’t I promised my wife that we’ll have another vacation before next December?!) ahead!

  1. Great post, Geno. I can empathize with the wasp incident (I had a similar experience in Kauai with a Portuguese man ‘o war). I highly agree with your point on the reading. It’s amazing what can be accomplished in a few hours of reading everyday (thanks again for the recommendations, by the way). Never tried a full body massage, I’ll have to look into it.

  2. Thank you for taking the time to comment, Jason.

Re reading: I normally read right before going to bed, and, naturally (after long work days), it is hard to devote as much time to reading as I could spend on it while having nearly nothing else to do. Last year I read 2 books in 7 days. This time I’ve managed to complete nearly 4 in 10 days.
